The San Antonio Herb Society was
formed in 1983 with the goals of sharing knowledge in planting,
growing, harvesting and using herbs for cooking, scenting,
decoration, and healing. Currently, the SAHS
has over 130 members.
The society participates in many area
gardening events throughout the year, including the Herb
Market in October. We
support the herb gardens at the
San Antonio Botanical
Center
.

second Thursday of the month at 7:00pm at the San Antonio Garden

The monthly meetings of the SAHS
always feature interesting speakers and programs. We were recently
honored to host Mark Blumenthal, internationally acclaimed advocate
of herbal medicine and founder and executive director of the
American Botanical Council and Jeanne Rose, Founder and Executive
Director of the Aromatic Plant Project and international authority
on the therapeutic uses of herbs. We also recently featured Howard
Garrett,
The Dirt Doctor,
authority on organic gardening. We've had many popular local chefs
including Theirry Burkle, Ralph Herrmann, Jay McCarthy, and
Bruce Auden. Several well known authors Madalene Hill and Gwen
Barclay, (Southern Herb Growing), and herbal mystery writer
Susan
Witting Albert. There have been other experts in their field
including Lucia Bettler of Lucia's Garden in Houston and Bill and
Sylvia Varney, owners of the Fredericksburg Herb
Farm.
GOODIES
In addition to informational and
educations programs at the monthly meetings, members can buy herb
books, plants, T-shirts and aprons and reduced prices. If you have a special interest,
several Special Interest Groups (SIGS) meet
regularly.
The SAHS has two annual Herbal
Potluck Banquets - one in May to celebrate National Herb Month, and
a holiday banquet in December. The Holiday Banquet features a gift
exchange and door prizes.
The November meeting is typically
our very popular Holiday Craft Market. At this time members sell
their own hand-crafted herbal items.
