SAHS Field Trip to Sandy Oaks Olive Orchard
14 members attended the field trip to this 10,000 tree olive orchard located 20 minutes south of San Antonio, off I-37 in Elmendorf, TX. The owner, Sandy Winokur, conducted an entertaining and informative tour. The fields of lovely olive trees dotted with stately live oaks were a sight to behold. Sandy covered many aspects of olive production and answered our questions concerning site selection, propagation, cultivation, irrigation, harvesting, pressing, and more. She taught us how to select the right olive oil for different uses. Members purchased olive oil, lotions, salves, soaps, olive trees, and more at her gift shop.
